Stanhope writes to her sister Lucy, 20 October [1808], about their brothers Charles and James; to her cousin [Sir Sydney Smith], 27 May and 30 June 1814, and 21 March 1815, about her life in Syria, English politics, and warfare on the Barbary Coast; to Joseph Banks, 24 December 1815, forwarding a box of medicine; to Dear Sir [James Silk Buckingham (traveller and founder of the Calcutta journal and the Athenaeum)], 23 March 1816, about the travel plans of William Bankes. To Colonel Decaut, 19 April 1816, about the murder of Colonel Boutin in the Ansary mountains for which she has avenged his death with the slaughter of Ansary villagers; to Sir, Thursday evening [ca. 1839], welcoming his visit and noting the death of her cousin. Charles Lewis Meryon, Stanhope's physician, writes to Sir Sydney Smith, 2 December 1813, about her illness [the plague] and travels in the desert. Also, includes a lithograph of Stanhope in Middle Eastern clothes drawn by R.J. Hamerton.

Lady Hester Lucy Stanhope (12 March 1776 – 23 June 1839) was the eldest child of Charles Stanhope, 3rd Earl Stanhope. In August 1803, she moved into the home of her uncle, Prime Minister William Pitt the Younger, to manage his household and act as his hostess and later secretary.
